PAYMENT FOR RELIEF WORK

CHRISTCHURCH, February 3

By nine votes to seven, the City Council decided to discontinue payment of los 3d per day for unemployment relief work. In future the amount payable will be fixeci in each case by the Works and Reserves Committees of the Council, such amounts in no case to exceed the amount paid by the Government for relief works.

The quarterly session of the Supreme Court was opened before Mr Justice Kennedy. As there were no criminal cases the Grand Jury, by direction of his Honour was not required to attend.

The Registrar presented his Honour with a pair of white gloves in token of there being no criminal charges. His Honour, in reply, stated it was not- absolute proof that there was no crime in the district because those who previously pleaded guilty had been committed for sentence at Wellington. The people of the district were to he congratulated that there were no unadmitted charges of crime to be dealt with.

The eighth annual conference of New Zealand Afaster Grocers Federation commenced this morning. The delegates were welcomed by the Mayor. AV. .T. Rogers. Tt concludes on Friday.

Tt was the most moving reception they had ever had. said a Wellington delegate, when the City Council Chambers rocked in a violent shake.
