RECOMMENDED TO TRADES UNION.
SYDNEY, January 28
A conference of secretaries ol Federal Union and Disputes 'Committee of Sydney Labour Council decided to recommend the Australian council ol Trades Unions to declare a general strike throughout Australia as a protest against the recent reduction of wages by the Federal Arbitration Court. The speakers condemned the Federal Government for inaction, and ‘‘leaving the workers at the mercy of National appointed Judges."
The recommendation comes before the Council to-morrow.

MADAME MELBA. SYDNEY, January 28. Tiie condition of Dame Nellie Melba lias slightly improved. The Governor of New South Wales received a cablegrain from the King inquiring as to her condition. A reply has been sent saying that her recovery will be veryslow. Dame Melba is now a patient in St. Vincent’s Private Hospital, at Sydney. ENDURANCE SWIM. SYDNEY, January 28. Frank Roberts, the one legged returned soldier, who completed thirtyeight and a half hours in the endurance swim is the winner of the male section. Mercedes Gleitze. Lily Copplestone and other women cbmpetitors enter the water to-morrow. NO IMMEDIATE DANGER. SYDNEY, January 28. The motor ship “Enton” is not in j any immediate danger. An attempt , is being made to float her to-day.
