The New London (Connecticut) Coastguard has reported that a United States coastguard cutter, in an exciting engagement, lias captured an alleged British rum runner, the “T'emis. conda,” of St. Johns, Newfoundland, which the coastguard discovered entering the hay at the tip of Long island.

The United States cutter fired some warning shots hut the vessel failed to stop, upon which a solid shot was fired. This shot struck the ruin boat amidships, wrecking her engines. Schmidt, (he boatswain commanding the coastguard cutter which fired upon the Canadian vessel Josephine !v on Saturday night was intoxicated, Wesley Anderson (mute ol the Josephine I\) declared to-day. Anderson alleged that Schmidt boarded the Josephine K after a shell from the cutter had crashed through the pilot-house, killing Captain Cluctt,

“ Don’t let those fellows give me any more liquor; I am drunk now,” Anderson credited Schmidt with having said.

Anderson produced a receipt purporting to have been signed by the officer in charge, acknowledging custody for safe keeping' of instruments from the Canadian vessel. Anderson claimed . the receipt was issued by tbo same,; man >v)io was in charge of the eoastguardsmeii's hoarding vessel.
