HOKITIKA SCHOOL COMMITTEE.
MONDAY, JANUARY 26
The Committee met at the technical school at 7 p.m.. Present: — Messrs A. C. Armstrong (chairman), F. Ghesterman, H. R. Sweney, R. J. Pedder, W. H. Shannon, W. E. Richards and J. Conning (lion, sec.) An apology was made for the absence of Mr Breeze.
The minutes were confirmed and correspondence outward approved
IN WAR D CORRESPONDENCE
From Canterbury Education Board stating Foreman had been instructed to attend to necessary repairs asked for.—Received.
From .Director of Hygiene, Wellington, notifying that the extra dental nurse’s services (Miss Gardiner) were to be discontinued at once as it was considered that- the back work had been picked up.—Received. The Chairman’s reply pointing out that the transfer of the extra nurse would seriously affect the work of the clinic especially in regard to the scholars of country schools, who had been promised early treatment and which promises would not be able to be kept if only one nurse were left in the district, was approved. From Department of Health, Wellington, repeating the statement that the services of Miss Gardiner had to he terminated as stated in a- previous letter, as had been advised when the appointment was temporarily made.— Received. Referred to the Chairman, to further reply again urging the position. The Chairman stated that Miss James stated that the work of the Hokitika school was as much as she could personally attend to. The Dental Nurse reported for tin month of Decern tier there were 269 operations and 99 attendances.—Received. The Chairman reported that the nurse had made several applications to Arahura scholars who had not attended at the clinic From Canterbury Education Board forwarding notification in connection with payment of subsidy on contributions.—Reeei ved.
The dental nurses reported for November there were 285 operations and 109 attendances (Miss James) and 209 operations and 114 attendances (Miss Gardiner). —Received. From Canterbury Board, Christchurch, in reference to carriage of ptfpils fom Blue Spur and South Spit. —Received.
From Runa-nga Picnic Committee asking ,that arrangements to he made for their excursion on Feb. 14 and from Brunner for the 7th. and Reefton on 4th.—Received. From Canterbury Board enclosing report from Messrs Wild and Bignell in regard to request hv Committee for purchase of two sections in front of school, and enquiring as to attitude of Committee in present- circumstances.— Received left to Chairman and Secretary to attend to. From Town Clerk inviting Committee and school children to attend the official welcome to the GovernorGeneral on Saturday next. —Received. Left to Chairman and Rector to attenu to. From Board notifying acceptance of resignation of Mrs Dale.—Received. From Canterbury Board notifying poposa-1 to appoint Miss D..M. Morthland as assistant teacher at Hokitika school and enclosing names of other applicants.—Received. From Blackball Committee stating arrangemnets would be made for the Hokitika excursion at Blackball.—Received.
From Canterbury Board notifying that it was unlikely that the bursaries issued to county scholars by the High School Board would be paid in the future.—Received. Mr Richards moved that the Committee views with extreme disapproval the confiscatory attitude of the Board in. regard to High School funds and enters an emphatic protest. Seconded by the Chairman and carried. If was resolved also to send a spirited protest to the Minister of Education and that the Chairman and Secretary confer with the Chairman of the High School Board.
The Secretary stated the fares for the excursion to Blackball from Hokitika would be pupils Is 9d, senior scholars 2s 2d, adults 3s. From. Harihari School Committee asking for arrangements to be made for a visit of the T)ental Nurse to give attention to the whole school.—Received. It was resolved to advise that until there was an addition to the dental staff, it was impossible for an officer to visit the district. From Hon. H. Atm ore conveying ’Xmas greetings.—Received. From Education Department notifying no subsidy on voluntary contributions would be available before 31st M arch.—Received.
The Rector reported that the school would resume on Monday 2nd. Feb. The terms would be Feb 2nd to 3rd. May (14wks.) vacation two weeks. Second Term May 25th. to Aug. 21st. (13wks.) vacation 2wks. and 1 day. Third term Sept. Bth. to Dec. 18th. (14wks and 4 days) vacation 6 weeks. —Received. Accounts as scheduled were passed for payment. The visiting Committee reported on condition of the school as satisfactory. .—.Received. It was resolved to vote £5 as a bonus to the caretaker. Arrangements for the excursion were left to the Secretary to arrange. On the suggestion of Mr Richards it was resolved to ask the Rector to use every endeavour to utilise school
books to their utmost utility with a view to saving parents every possible expense during the coming year. Messrs Chesterman and Richards were appointed visitors for the month. The Committee rose at 9.15 p.m.
