OVER BROKEN ENGAGEMENT

TE AWAMUTU, January 24,

Prank Kerr, a carpenter, was arrested this morning on a charge of attempted murder of Gertrude West. The couple are believed to have been ■engaged, but became'recently estranged. It isalleged that Kerr borrowed a shot gun,i and went to the girl's home. It is stated lie was seen to load the gun when he was a few chains from the girl’s house. Entering the front gate h© went up to the girl, who was in the garden. They talked for a minute or two.i Then the girl called her father. When the latter came out of the house, Kerr is alleged to have raised the gun and shot the girl 'before her father, could reach her. Constable Rimmer, on arriving, found Kerr kneeling over the girl, and arrested him on a charge of attempted murder. f

The girl, who had sustained very serious abdominal injuries, was removed to the Waikato Hospital. She regained consciousness,' but she has sai l nothing about Kerr.

It appears that the girl had broken off the engagement'ia few days .ago. Kerr is aged thirty-nine, while the girl’s age is about nineteen.
