HOKITIKA BOROUGH COUNCIL.
FRIDAY, JANUARY 23rd. The Council met at 7.30 p.m. Present: Messrs CL A. Perry (Mayor), T. W. Duff, E. W. Heenan, J. King, A. A. Armstrong and Dr. Teichelmann. Apologies were made for the absence of Messrs Evans and El cock and further leave of absence was granted to Mr Turner till 31st. March. The minutes were confirmed ana outward correspondence approved.
INWARD CORRESPONDENCE
From William Wilson, agent for T. P.-O’Neil, application for consent to subdivide section 3303, Park Street, into six lots _of 1 rood, each with a frontage of 83.33 links.—Received and request granted. From A; Askew, application for separate water service connection for domestic supply to Section 1563, Sewell Street.—Received, referred to the Foreman,

Mr M., G. Andrewes, application for two months’ leave of absence.—Received and- granted. From Secretary, State Collieries Pic. nic Committee, re booths in Cass Square.—Received. It was resolved to reply stating the Council had no power to give sole right to erect booths. From Health Inspector, Greymouth, notifying two cases of infectious disease, and furnishing reports on work confirmed for the months of October and November. —Received. From N. Z. Institute of Town Clerks, intimating that Conference will be held at Rotorua on the 3rd. March next.— Received.
From Municipal Association of N.Z., asking for attention of Local Authorities to Section 13 of the Finance Act, 1927, No. 2, and recommending that cheques lodged as deposits for tenders should bo hold unbanked until the tenders are dealt with.—Received.
FOREMAN'S REPORT, The Foreman’a report for work d°n e during the month i Streets, —Forty loads rough gravel was used widening the east portion of Stafford Street between Livingston Street and the east town belt, 14 loads of gravel were put on Rol lepton Street levelling up a depression between I Hampden and Park Streets, fourteen loads of soreened gravel were put on the footpath at the corner of Cass Square near the Gasworks; sevenal streets were clipped and cleaned about the town and the spoil was used filling up the drain on the south side of Weld Street which was recently piped, Drains. —The remaining part of Rol. leston Street was filled in occupying four days j a blockage was cleaned out in Tailored Street between Weld and Stafford Street, The growth was cut on both sidos of Livingston Street and the drain cleaned out between Stafford Street and the river, and twenty-six feet of the box drain renewed at the outlet to the river. Six wooden pipes were put in behind Cameron’s in Tancred Street, and the culvert repaired on the North Belt leading to the sea.
Two days were spent cleaning up the rubbish dump, Kerbing was started on the 16th at North Revell Street and in Weld Street near the Power Station, when 'about twelve chains were completed by the cud of the month, Water, —Three new pipes were put ) in the main at the corner of Sewell [ Street ond Gibson's Quay, and five . new ones between Sale and Rolleston , Street on the Quay, new stopcocks were put in at the Red Lion Hotel, a water connection was put in to a new resi- , dence in Park Street and a trap put ,j in at the Marquis of Lome Hotel. . jTlie wnter main crossing McKay's I Bridge on the Lake road drew apart on the night of the 17th, and a blow out in Tucker Flat on the 18th, these were repaired, and leaks in various parts of the town repaired. There are I several new pipes required in different | parts of the town, and as thirty new pipes came to hand during the month, these will be attended to as spon as I the kerbing is finished. The average ' depth of water in the reservoir for the month was 10 feet. I Growth.—The growth in various streets were cut, close to the town, hut the back streets where the growth )is exceptionally heavy this year will . be attended to this coming month. We had the County Council’s heavy drag on the Highways for three days before Christmas levelling the ridges, and the result was a very much improved surface,—-Received. ABATTOIRS. From the manager Abattoirs reporting for month of December there were
slaughtered:—l4 cows, 15 heifers, 64 bullocks, 234 sheep, 247 lambs, 6 pigs, 12 calves. Condemned 1 pig. For the month £76 19s 6d (same period last year £72 4s Od). —Received.
REPORTS. The Treasurer reported— Receipts £284 14 8 Payments £696 15 8 Debit balance £7S7 I) 6 Accounts amounting to £1034 14s 6d were passed for payment.
The .Mayor said tin* Council had now reached a stage where they must call a halt. As a result of past expend iture in connection with unemployment and the slowness with which the rates had come in the Council had run to its limit and the Council would have to move slowly until 31st March and to restrict itself to town matters with its staff, and any extra work would have to bo held over for the present, until there was an improvement in the finances.
RUBBISH DUMP. The Town Clerk reported that the sub-committee appointed to interview the members of the Hokitika Harboui Board in regard to the rubbish dump, met members .of the Board, who agreed that if the Council would restrict the removal of rubbish to one carrier and have the rubbish deposited at the low water mark, and see that the dump is kept in such a condition so as not to be a nuisance, the Council could use the dump as heretofore. Following this, the Town Clerk was directed to invite tenders from the loeal carters and your sub-eotmnittee have accepted the tender of Ml’s B. E, Coyle at 2/9 per ioac(, a tip dray with 2ft, sides to be used for tlie repiayql of flip rubbish, —Received. The Cpuncjl rose at 8.4,5 p.m.
