MINING

OKARITO FIVE-MILE BEACH. The following report on work done at the Okarito Five-Mile Beach Gold Dredging Company's claim has been received by the secretaries, Messrs W. A. Mitson and Co:— “Work at the company’s claim, which was suspended for the holidays was resumed at the beginning of last week. The carpenters are now engaged on the erection of the top framing gantry of the dredge and the decking of' the ;pontoons. The elevating plant which was used in excavating a paddock for the dredge, is now in operation on a new site, some 27 chains north of the dredge paddock. Tn sinking the elevator at its new site the the formation passed through for the first 13 feet in depth consisted of material turned over by the early diggers, but sill containing gold. From the 13ft , level to the bottom which was met , with at a depth of 22ft from the surface, the ground is still in a virgin state and carries good prospects thro- I ughout, its value being * apparently ; about the same as the ground treated in taking out tie paddock for the dredge. Operations will be continued with the elevating plant until the dredge is ready to commence working." It is understood that a wash-up will he held in about a fortnight’s time to obtain the gold won by the sluicing pperations which are being carried on. j :
