CHIEF JUSTICE. (Australian Presa Association.) SYDNEY, January 23. The Federal Cabinet decided to create Sir Frank Cavan Dully as Chief Justice of the High Court of Australia, in succession to Sir l. Isaacs. FATAL VERANDAH CRASH. SYDNEY, January 23. Following on a spell of intense heat to-day a “southerly buster” struck Sydney. It brought down a verandah iii the front of premises that recently were destroyed by fire at Camperdowu, a suburb. Several people were waiting for buses underneath the verandah, some of whom rushed to safety, but four girls were overwhelmed in a mass of tangled steel and galvanised iron. One, Irene Ryan, aged 18 years, was killed. The others were cut and bruised, and are suffering from shock.
AX EXPLOSION. ADELAIDE, January 23. A gaol warder and one prisoner are dead as the result of a premature explosion at the gaol on Wednesday. INCOME TAX INCREASE. ' SYDNEY. January 24. The Minister of Lands (Mr Sculley), addressing a large unemployed gathering at Goulbourn predicted an increase in the income tax, increased fees for laud transactions and transfers and increased death and probate duties. “We are in a drastic position for money and will, grab at anything that will give u* a chalice to ;olit’v*.; \i)Jcmployment in this State," lie said, INCREASED TRADE HOPED FOR. MELBOURNE, January 24. Recovery to normal conditions of trade and employment are expected by manufacturers and employers as a result of the general reduction by ten per cent. of. the rates of twenty-six awards. It is generally agreed, however, that the process will he slow.
