PROFITABE ORDERS, THROUGH BOXER INDEMNITY. (Official Wireless.) RUGBY, January 29. the Chinese Government will spend 1.3,000,000 of the Boxer .Indemnity on British railway equipment for tiie rehabilitation of the Chinese railways. .j\- 11. Dalton (Under-Secretarv for Foreign Affairs), during the second reading of a bill representing an agreement with China on the Boxer Indemnity question, explained that 03,600,000 was lying in the bank at Shanghai, and it is to be transferred to London. An educational grant of 0265,000 is to he paid to the Hong Kong University, and £2,000,000 to the Chinese University Committee in London. The balance will lie paid to the Chinese Government’s London Purchasing Commission which will invest £3,000,000 mi the rehabilitation and improvement of the Chinese railways, the material to he brought from Britain.
Replying to questions in the House of Commons, Under-Secretary Dalton, reviewing recent events in China, said that, generally speaking the position of the Nanking Government has been greatly strengthened. The rebellion in the Northwest Provinces seemed now definitely at an end. Complete harmony appeared to exist between the President of the Republic and the Government of Manchuria, and determined efforts were being made to suppress the outbreak olf organised banditry which unhappily occurred during 1030 in the interior.
