CONFERENCE CALLED

CHRISTCHURCH, January 21

The setting up of an independent tribunal to which farmers in financial difficulties could appeal will be urged at a conference in Wellington shortly. This conference is to be representative of all rural interests, and will place

the position of the country before the Prime Minister.

CHRISTCHURCH, January 21

The following resolution was adopted by the North Canterbury Provincial Executive of the Farmers’ Union this afternoon :—“That this meeting recommends to the forthcoming conference of rural representatives at Wellington that the necessary legislation be secured to protect farmers from foreclosure; farmers in difficulties to have the right to appeal to an independent tribunal to be set up; that tribunal to have the power to make reasonable adjustments in order to secure eqiuality of sacrifice between all parties; interest, the first charge on income of any form to be reasonable as To the living cost of the man working the farm.” This motion caused considerable discussion, mainly along the lines that farmers were facing the hardest of times. A reduction of Government expenditure, especially in the civil service, was advocated.
