FALL OFF VIADUCT.

TAUMAKVXUT. January 20. For two days past. John Blum berg aged 00, employed by Ellis and Burnand in the bush about 8 miles from Ongarue, complained to his mates about his health. This morning

set off from the camp to walk to Ongarue with a mate, Harry Gray, for ‘lie purpose of receiving medical advice. The two men walking along the tramline for some distance and after Gray had crossed over a viaduct about 80 feet deep, he looked round and found that Blumberg was not in sight. Gray searched in the gully beneath the tramline and discovered Blumberg’s dead body.

A FATAL DIVE

HAMILTON. January 21

Richard Ambrose Clarke, 22 years who sustained a fractured neck when lie dived into a shallow poo] at Te Kotohai on Sunday, January 11. succumbed to Iris injuries in Waikato Hospital last evening. Deceased dived from a height of ten feet into a pool four feet deep.

WAITOPU HOTEL BURNT

Waitopu Hotel, Post Office and store was completely destroyed by fire at an early hour this morning. Nothing was saved, the proprietor and staff escaping in their night attire.

Owing to the wires being down, details are meagre.

The building was erected thirtyeight years ago by John Calc-one. The license was owned by L. I). Nathan. The present proprietor, John Hickey, lias been in possession for twenty-seven years. In the coaching days the.hotel was one of the most frequented in the thermal regions, It is situated on an angle of the main road leading to Toiipo and iVhmipere and is the centre of a vast afforestation area.

A conviction.

BLENHEIM, January 21

Thomas David Thomas, 32, Andrew McDonald, 41, Gerald Lawton, 23, reached Blenheim yesterday in search of work. They were convicted this ijtorning, Two bottles of whisky were taken from the Criterion Hotel. McDonald was seen to leave the bar with the whisky, He was sentenced to two months, and Thomas one month. Both had previous convictions, Nothing is known against Lawton, an Australian, who was sentenced to seven days.
