WELLINGTON, January 20. The tote took £28,7005, compared with £48,993$ on .the corresponding day last year. The cup was a poor, unexciting contest. Gay Crest was in front early but was displaced by Don Jose half a mile from home. The latter was challenged by Stanchion in the straight, and was beaten by half a length. Gay Crest being two lengths away. The winner and runner-up were rank outsiders. Ammon Ra scored a great win the Wellington Stakes, .coming solidly from well back. The Southlander, Palermo, won the 'Telegraph Handicap ' meritoriously, being always well up, and proving its ability in the soft ground.
