When the ship was turning in the river, the swinging wire carried away, arid the rope on tno off quarter fouled the propellor, wheronnon, the vessel commenced to clrilt downstream. She was Broadside on to the current, nnd her stern missed striking the steamer Poolta, berthed i just, below her. hv the narrowest of j margins. A line was cast, and the j ICaimai was helped hack alongside the wharf, below the Poolta. After a short delay in clearing the propellor, the Kaimai left on her voyage. There is not much romance about n hotel meal as a rule, hut those who ate their dinner at the Bush Inn last Sunday week probably regard it as a memorable occasion. 'Lite lood had a history, says the Christchurch I inies. Following the usual custom the cook had prepared the food the previous evening, and it was left overnight in the pantry. It did not rest there long, however, for a prowler climbed in through a window gathered the food together and took it off with him. Later that night a constable saw a man coming from a right-of-way ?.t the Royal Hotel, and, accosting him. found that he carried a number <>f bottles. ’J'he constable arrested the man, the detectives took the matter in hand, and as a result, recovered the food which had been stolen from the Bush Inn. So the guests at the hotel had their dinner after all. The marauder had his in the lock-up. A crowd of nearly two hundred people quickly gathered at about 11 o’clock on Saturday night says the “Argus” in Upper Tainui Street in frout of the Bakery shop of Mr W. Robertson, the congregation being the consequence of a very loud crash, which attracted not a few who were clad only in their night attire. The spectacle which met their gaze was that of the forepart of a half ton motor truck penetrating the wall of the shop on the Thompson Street side with the front wheels practically touching the counter, and the lower part of the wall in a shattered state. The occupants of the building, who were in the upper storey, imagined, at the sound of the impact, that a worse earthquake than that of June 17th., 1929, was commencing. The cause of the accident was the truck attempting to pass' a ear about to turn into Thompson Street, and being unable to cheek speed in time the lorry mounted the footenth and smashed into the side of the shop, a couple of feet away from the front of the window, the wheels and forepart penetrating into the shop, itself. The counter was slewed around somewhat, nnd a showcase and shelves were dislodged with their contents. Tt was only a few r.-.;«,,+r>c; U'-friiv-. the accident that the girl attendant had left the shop. The truck a Dodge machine belonging to ~ TTnvboor Board, was Somewhat damaged, hut the driver’s only injury was a cut on the hand.
