He was beard groaning in the shaft, and a workman named McKenzie volunteered to go down to flic res--cue. McKenzie himself was almost
overcome. McKenzie found Briggs unci nscious, and the Iwo men were brought to the surface, where they soon recovered. The shaft is in the core wall of a darn that is being built to extend the New Plymouth Power Scheme. It is assumed that Briggs injured his hand in trying to grasp the stem that controls tiro valve in an endeavour to arrest his fall.
