January 13. “The time has come to tell the truth in regard to unemployment in France,” says Air Grennwall (the “Dailv'Express’s” Paris correspondent. ) ‘‘The official statement is that cliere are twelve thousand unemployed, but there is really a quarter of a million. and another quarter of a million short-timers. France has held back the figures as long as possible., because- the dole is unknown in France. Unemployed relief is a matter for the District Councils.” 'fhe correspondent hints that France may he the first country since the war to issue gold currency. He says that influential people are urging this to relievo the gold congestions, despite which France is practising inflation on an extensive scale. He says the note issue has reached staggering proportions. with the result that the cost of living is rising and unemployment is soaring.
