POPE’S ENCYCLICAL
THE MARRIAGE CONTRACT, (United Press Association- By Electric Telegraph.—Copyright.) LONDON, January 8. Lengthy extracts from the Pope’s Encyclical, arc given prominence in the newspapers Helen ing to the marriage contract it says—“A wi'e should lie subject to the husband, but subjection does not deny liberty which belongs to the woman in view of the dignity as a human being and noble office of wife, mother and companion, nor does it hid her to obey her husband’s every [ requests, when the request is unreasonable. Marriage requires a wife’s noble obedience.” It declares the sancticv of marriage is trampled and derided by all modern scientific inventions of man, and divorce and adultery and all the basest vices are extolled. It proceeds to refer to birth control—‘•'Women of the Catholic Church are entrusted by God to defend and j preserve the chastity of the nuptial union which has been defiled by this foul sin. Thom who indulge therein are branded with the guilt of a grave sin. Any circumstances such as health, or economic conditions do ■ not constitute an excuse.”
