SUCCESSFUL NEW ZEALANDER
DOMINION REVISITED. DUNEDIN, January 5. A member of a successful English enamel manufacturing firm with connexions in every country in Europe and most countries of the world, Air Herbert H. Scott, of Kingston-on-Thames, Surrey, who is at present visiting Dunedin, started life in this city selling copies of the “Otago Daily Times” at street corners, and delivering copies of the “Otago Witness” to subscribers. His father had been accidentally killed when Mr Scott was only six months old, and his mother died when lie was 14 years of age, so that he was early thrown on his own resources.
When still a youth, Mr Scott went to England as a steerage passenger, landing there with £25 in his pocket, and with this as his capital established himself in business. When the war broke out, Air Scott was associated with Major F. H. Dampen, of this city, with whom . lie has now renewed his acquaintance, in forming a contingent of New Zealanders in London, and lie himself saw service on the Gallipoli Peninsula, whence he was invalided to New Zealand 111 the troopship Willochra, coming with the first draft of wounded men sent back by that vessel. On his restoration to health, Mr Scott was engaged under Lord North el iff e in propaganda in the United States. On the conclusion of the war, he started his business once more, and has had the satisfaction of seeing its ramifications extend throughout the world Personally, he attributes his success part'v to the high esteem in which New Zealand is regarded in the different countries.
On his return to his native country on this occasion, Air Scott has walked the Milford Track, which, he considers, provides the finest scenery in the world, and, before he returns to England, he intends to enjoy deep-sea fishing at the Ray of Islands.
