The Governor-General has to-day telegraphed to the French Government, a message expressing the deep sympathy of the Government and people of New Zealand in the loss which tho French nation has sustained by the death of Marshal JofFro. LYING IN STATE. (Received this day at 11 a.m.) PARIS, January 5. A mile long queue is waiting to file past Marshal Joffre’s body, which is lying on a soldiers camp bed, draped in flags at Chapel Ecole Militaire. He is dressed in 1914 field uniform, and wears the Medalle Militaire, Insignia of Grand Cross, and Legion of Honour. The Marshal’s long blue cloak covers the lower part of the body and the hands rest on the gold hilt of his sword.

Four Generals with drawn swords are standing at each corner of the catalfalgue and the Marshal’s stand ard bearer behind.
