TEN RESCUES ON. TARANAKI

BEACH.

(By Telegraph—Per Presß Association.* NEW PLYMOUTH, Jan. 2 /Ten rescues from drowning were efected by life-savers on the Taranaki beaches yesterday and t-daoy. Yesterday a child aged four was drowned a Kohi, near Waverley. Seven off the rescues' were effected at Kity.roy Beach, New Plymouth, by beach patrols, swimmers getting into difficulties in the surf . Four men from Okato were caught in an undertow at Oakura. One, C. Wooldridge, is still very exhausted. The child drowned at Kohi, Ulric William Benbrook, was with a party pinicking on the bank of a stream, and was missed, and later was found floating down stream. Extremely hot weather in the past few days enticed crowds to the beaches .

YACHT IN A GALE

WELLINGTON. Jan. 1

According to privfae advice. ttie yacht Windward, which left Wellington was hove to in a gale for 12 hours and on Wednesday the seas carried away the main sheet and topping lifts, ifreeing the main booth, which broke loose and carried a man overboard. He was proniptply rescued, an the boat, was again hove to for three hours, repairs being effected. All on board are-well. The Windward arrived s a rely at the Chatham Islands at 4 p.m. yesterday,- from Wellington, whence she sailed at nine o’clock on Christmas morning. The message reported “ All well.” The crew of the Windward comprises Messrs P. P. Rollings, Colin Steele, Don Graham and A. H. Irwin. The Windward is the smallest yacht that has yet made the trip from Wellington to the Ghnthams.
