The Returned Soldiers’ Club art union was drawn on Wednesday night at the Soldiers' Hall, under official supervision, in the presence of a large number of subscribers. The result of the drawing appears in another column. The first two prizes were won by local residents, and tho third by a resident of Waiho Gorge.
The Westland Trotting Club’s meeting takes place to-morrow afternoon on the. Hokitika racecourse. There are capital entries, and acceptances close to-night at 9 o’clock with Mr M. Houston, secretary. The course is in capital order and good trotting should result. The first race takes place at 12,30 p.m.
An inquest touching the death of Reginald George dStnnton, a single man. nineteen years of age, who died in the Christchurch Hospital on Monday night from injuries received an a result of accidentally jumping on to a willow stick in the Wnimnkariri rjver-ibed on Sunday afternoon, was held Iby Mr E. P. Mosley, Coroner, or Tuesday. A verdict was returned that Stanton died from general peritonitis following injuries caused through accidentally jumping on to a stick

New Year’s Eve attracted a large crowd into the town. There was beautiful weather and the streets '•ore a lively appearance till a late hour. At midnight the firebell tolled to ring in the new year, and the rnual greetings were given voice to. The Black Hand Orchestra’s dance in the Soldiers’ Hall attracted a large attendance and the proceedings were very enjoyable. New Year’s Day was again a real summer’s day and there was an exodus to various points of interest. A good number travelled to the Grey races while the scenic resorts also attracted large numbers.
