SACRIFICES NEEDED
ALL CLASSES TO PARTICIPATE
ARCHBISHOP OF CANTERBURY’S ADDRESS.
t (Official Wireless)
RUGBY, December 29
The old need for sacrifice in the face of one of the most serious ordeals with which Great Britain has e-ver been faced was emphasised in a sermon last night by the Archbishop of Canterbury, in Canterbury Cathedral. The sacrifice must be made by all classes and sections, he said, though 't would be a sacrifice of long conceived opinions. There must be a readiness to view the situation in the light of the existing facts. There must be sacrifices by industry, agricultural and trade unions, and the sacrifices were rendered necessary in order to secure for industry and for Labour that mobility which was needed to meet the crisis of the present time. There might even have to’ be a sacrifice of advantages which certain sections of the community, quite rightly, at one time secured for themselves, but which were no longer consistent with the right and fairness to the whole body of' people., There might have to be, though it was had to say it, some temporary sacrifice of the standard of life, deservedly won oil the basis of the past, when production and sale were assured. There must be a sacrifice in order to ease the recovery of that basis in future. Not- the least; there must be a sacrifice especially by the wealthier, in expenditure on amusement and luxuries.
