DRUNKEN DELUSION. (By Telegraph—Per Press Association.) AUCKLAND, December 29. “He thought he was being chased by a man with a gun; he rushed into a neighbour’s house, was collared by two men, and when 1 arrived they had him pinned down, sitting on his chest.” This description of the actions of a middle-aged plumber was given by Constable Hickley in the Police Court this morning, when the man appeared before the Magistrate (Air F. K. Hunt, S.M.) on a charge of being in a state of helpless drunkenness in Brighton Road on December 20. He was prohibited. MISSING MAN RETURNS. CHRISTCHURCH, December 29. Mr Gus Davis, who had been missing since Christmas Eve, returned to his home at 170, Antigua Street, on Sunday. 'THEFT CHARGE. WELLINGTON, December 30. Richard George Clifton, canvasser, 20, pleaded not guilty to-day, to a charge of theft of money while a servant of Cash Orders Ltd., and was committed to the Supreme Court for trial. It was alleged that in statements to the police, Clifton admitted stealing the office ke.y of the strong room and having a duplicate made, and that he incriminated two men who, he declared used the key and subsequently gave him" some of the proceeds of the theft. In a separate statement to the police he said that he alone was concerned with the theft. Bail was allowed in accused’s bond of £2QO, one security of £2OO or two of £IOO each. He was ordered to report to the police daily. OVERTIME QUESTION. WE LLING TON TR AMW A YMEN. WELLINGTON, December 30. So far the Wellington tramwaymen and the City Council have arrived at no agreement, in respect to the proposals of the management for a reduction of overtime. The union has made a coUnter-suggestioii of a day off fortnightly. ,Jt...is said that this would mean a greater wage loss than the loss to the Department, but upon a matter of principle, the men favour it. . The general manager, M Cable, stated to-day, commenting on the result of the meeting in Christchurch, that anything in Abe nature of an ultimatum would lie unwise at the present, and that was\ recognised by the Welington tramway employees. There had been no spirit of antagonism during the discussion, and he believed a satisfactory solution would he found.
