FOREST SERVICE
FERE IN PLANTATION. Yesterday afternoon about 2 o’clock a fire occurred in the Forest Service plantation, on the Ross road, that threatened at one time to have a very serious result. The outbreak occurred near where the Mananui mill tramway crosses the Ross road. There were two places where the outbreak occurred, both alongside the road, and the cause is not ascertained. Luckily the outbreak was soon observed and all the Forest Service staff available were called on. The fire spread rapidly amongst the bracken and for four hours the men had a hard fight before the fiire was got in band, it being 7 p.m. before further danger was averted. There was only one water dam available, the creeks in the vicinity being dry. Altogether some 30 acres of thepH anted reserve comprising redwood and pirius' insignia was fire swept, and considerable damage was sdone. Some of the trees were up- to ten feet in height. A careful watch was kept, during the night there being, a quantity of smouldering places that needed attention, hut the staff have now fulT control.
