N.S.W. UPPER HOUSE
GOVERNMENT TO APPEAL
(Australian Press Association.)
SYDNEY, December 22
The “Pictorial’s” picturesque story of how Premier J. T. Lang allegedly blocked the way of the Chief Justice (Sir Philip Street) to the LieutenantGovernorship is officially denied. It is pointed out that the Governor and Mr Lang discussed the matter and the former, having said that action was unnecessary until he visited another State, the subject was dropped. The King’s commission to Sir Philip Street was signed on October 1 of this year and clothed him with all the powers and privileges of the Lieutenant-Gov-ernor’s office exercisable at the King’s command, not at the pleasure of the Premier or Cabinet Minsters. Finally, it is stated that no trouble whatever had occurred and Sir Philip Sreet would assume his duties automatically whenever the necessity arose.
The State Ministry will appeal to the High Court against the decision of the iSuoreme Court on the measure to abolish the Legislative Council. Forty in the Necv Year the Premie*(Mr J. T. Lang) and colleagues will meet to consider the recommendations of their legal advisers and the grounds of the appeal. LONDON, December 27.
Deferring, to the New South Wales Upper House decision, tlie “Observer” says. The Supreme Court ruling seems sound, and it points out that the New South Wales Parliament owes its existence to an Act passed by tlie United Kingdom Parliament. Tt asks bow New South Wales can amend it.
