WESTLAND RACING CLUB

MIDSUMMER MEETING. FIRST DAY RESULTS. The Westland Racing Club opened their summer meeting yesterday. The weather which was fine in the early morning started to drizzle about 11 o’clock and until nearly five o’clock there was a. light misty drizzle, that damped the pleasure of patrons though never hardly heavy enough to call a shower. There was a very fair attendance somewhat smaller than last year. The course and appointments were in capital order, though the going got somewhat heavy as the afternoon were on. There were good fields tHfe racing was excellent throughout while punters in only two cases placed the winner in the favourite position on the machine. Speculation showed a drop, Mr H. Lynch putting through the sum of £6905;} or the day as against £10,026 last year and £7272 in 1929 on the first day. After the the Westland Cup Handicap had been run tbe President (Mr W. FJ. Williams) congratulated the winning owner. Mr A, Beban, Greymouth) oft the success of his horse Kill!grew, and called on Mf CL W, Keller (President of thle Westland Licensed Victuallers) to make the presentation of a valuable cutlery set, to the winning owner. Mr Keller in doing so extended his hearty congratulations to the winner and at his call, hearty cheers were given for horse and owner. Mr A. Beban - replying stated any praise should be given to the trainer (T. L. Bennett) and the jockey, expressing his great pleasure at securing the valued trophy. The Municipal Band and Mr Parry’s parrvphone supplied a full programme of music during tbe afternoon. The starting of Mr Reed won very favourable comment and much interest was shown in the very efficient manner in which Mr H. Butlnnd’s starting machine worked. The following are the results. MAIDEN HANDICAP. Of £7O, 5} furlongs. (5) Solvear 9.0 1 (1) Ringing Cheer 8.5 ... 2 (3) Minerval 8.3 3 Also started. Gay Nita, 9.0, Coupon 9.0, Rib Rita 9.0, Haldon 9.0, Mataa 9.0, Dawn o' Day 9.0, Miss Anomaly GO, Tbnroham Lass 9.0, Counter March 30. Ringing Cheer led the field soon after the start and held it to the distance where Solvear got his head in' front to win by 1} lengths with Minerval half a length away third. Time 1. 11. Kentish Lady 8.4, Tariff 7.10,' Kentish Lady and Arch Arrow took the lead and then Crunchem ran to the front and led all the way home to win easily by two lengths, with Solwit-half a-length away third. Time 1.17 2-5. Tote £785. , RIMU HACK HANDICAP. Of £IOO. seven furlongs. (6) Grand Acre 7.12 1 (3) Bright Speay 8.3 2 (1) Ramo 7.3 3 Also started, Fortalice 9.3, Coll 7.12, Silent 7.11, Shining Star 7.4, Grattan 7.3. Eaton Hall 7.1. From an even start Grand Acre led the field for the whole way, and won by a length with Ramo the favourite a length further back third. Time 1.31 1-5. . Tote £791. WESTLAND CUP HANDICAP. Of £IBO and a set of cutlery presented by the Licens'd Victuallers Assn. 11 miles. (3) Killigrew 7.1 1 (6) Fairy Tidings 7.5 2 (2) Beau Geste 8.9 3 Also started, (1) Black Duke 10.3, (4) Pangolin .8.5, (5) Audience 7.2. The field went away promptly with Killigrew in front and Black Duke last. The field was well together all round without much alteration till the run home. Though the field closed u-p Killigrew held his place to win by three quarters of a length, Beau Geste half a length a wav third.. Time 2.14 4-5. Tote £953}. CHRISTMAS HANDICAP. Of £IOO,. five and a half furlongs. Flair 8.7 1 (1) Sleipner 7.9 2 (3) Coomassie 8,2 3 Also started, Sagittarius 8.7, The Dove 7.7. After some delay at the start Flair went away and led the field throughout to win all the way bv four lengths. Coomassie two lengths further away. Time 1.10 4-5. Tote £9O3J. STEWARDS HANDICAP. Of £9O, seven furlongs. (5) Pari 8.0 1 (1) Giggleswick 8.10 2 (81 Bank Draft 8.0 3 Also started, Alerfeldy 9.3, Ardfinnan 8.7, Silent 8.6, John Dix 8.0, Shan die 8.0, General Assembly 8.0. Bank Draft made the running from Ardfinnan to tbe entrance to tbe straight where tbe latter ran wide and the favourite Giggleswick made a big bid but Pari came very fast to win by,a length with Bank Draft 1} lengths further back, tbe field lieing Well bunched.
