CONSTABLE ASSAULTED.

WELLINGTON, December 21. 'Arrested near Mount Victoria reset'fl

Gilbert Edward Janie*? N'ort. hcot-t. turned round and hit the constable between the eyes and escaped. He was afterwards arrested and when his house was searched, an unlicensed .22 calibre revolver was discovered. He*was charged to-day with -assaulting a constable in the execution of his duty and being in possession of an unregistered firearm.

Senior-Sergeant Edwards said that as a result of complaints that certain individuals were falsely * representing themselves to be police constables in tbe reserve three constables were sent to keep watch, and it was when one of them arrested Northcott that the assault was made. The Senior-Sergeant described Northcott as dangerous, and said that he had declared to the constable who finally arrested him that if he had had his gun he would have shot him.

Accused pleaded not guilty, declaring that when be struck the constable be was not aware be was a policeman. Mr Page sentenced accused to a month’s imprisonment on the charge of assault and fined him £5 :• on the other charge, in default fourteen days’ imprisonment. An order was made for the weapon and ammunition to be forfeited. SALE OF DUNEDIN THEATRE. DUNEDIN, December 24.
