RAILWAY WORKS
NELSON LAMENT. tßy Telegraph—Press Association). NELSON, December 23. The Progress League, representing all the local bodies in the districts, passed this resolution: That a/ter full, consideration of the statement by the Acting-Prime Minister, regarding the curtailment of expenditure on railway construction and the announcement of the decision to suspend work on midland line, the League desires to remind the Government of the definite' election pledge given by Sir J. Ward to complete the midland railway as a main trunk line, and its subsequent reaffirmation of such policy, as Prime Minister of New Zealand, to the Nelson Province in May, 1929, which resulted in the Government obtaining authority to complete the line to Inangaliua Junction. The League further draws the Government’s attention to the> public statement made by the present Premier in Murchison, in March, 1930, regarding the construction of the line. The League is of opinion that so long a s railway construction policy is being pursued, the midland railway is of such national importance that it should be continued to completion, and in the circumstances, respectfully ask that the ivorli be not suspended.
