JOURNEY ON AMAZON. AUCKLAND, December 22. A trip down the Amazon River from its headwaters is being planned for next .July or August by Dr L. E. Rice, of Toronto, Canada, who arrived in Auckland by the Tofua yesterday in the course of a tour ip which he is visiting Australia, the Dutch East Indies, China and Japan. Dr Rice, who is widely-travelled, proposes starting from Peru, crossing the Andes and making the trip down the river by canoe, probably with two companions. “Few people have evei been able to make the complete tiip. he said. East year Dr Rice went to Africa with tlie British Association for the Advancement of Science, which foregathers every five years in some outpost of the Empire. The doctor left the main party soon after arriving in Cairo and he made a trip down the Nile with a companion. First of all they had to travel through 800 miles of jungle and they followed the rivei from its source to the sea. “It was a trying trip and one that I am glad to have taken,, but it is one I shall never repeat,” he said. “Tile heat is terrific ahd one is subject to all kind;of fever and disease, particularly sleeping sickhess.” In lndo-Chltnt Dr Rice is ahxious to explore the ancient city of Angkor, which is believed to have been founded about 500 B.C. The city although overgrown by the jungle, is still in a wonderful state of preservation. Before leaving for Australia,, Dr Rice will make a tour df the Dominion.
