TATTERSALL’S CLUB
NEW ZEALAND SOCIETY. PETITION TO PARLIAMENT. AUCKLAND, Dec. 20. A society known as New Zealand Tattersall’s Sweep Club has recently been incorporated, its purpose being, to petition Parliament asking that a leferendum be taken on the question of. holding lotteries on tlie lines of Tattersall’s, of Tasmania; A natio ml campaign for members has been launched, Mr Vivian H. Potter being the New Zealand organiser.
Mr Potter said that he had ascertained that in this city a group of seven agents of Tattersall’s sent away a total 'sum of over"£800 a week, and lie had reason' to believe that an agent in Sydney received by poist- from individual New Zealanders no less than £4OO a week. These facts indicated the volume of business done in this country, in which there wore hundreds'of forwarding agents and, many thousands of peoolo who sent their money direct to Australian agents. It was probable that a sweepstake on the lines oT Tattersall’s' would return to the Government £200,000 a. year if the Tasmanian rate of tax were imposed, but- more important still would he the retention in the country of all the money involved. Prom the result of the club s canvass to date, he said, there appeared to lie every likelihood of a very large membership being built up to gi'c strength to the request for a referendum.
