At a conference of medicos at Birmingham recently the subject of tobacco cropped up. The president said that if some method could be devised of eliminating nicotine from tobacco, tbe discovery would benefit humanity because nicotine was- responsible for many nnv grave ills. Surely the doctors taking part in that conference are behind tbe times—otherwise they would know that tobacco is now being grown and manufactured in New Zealand which is practically free from nicotine. This happy result has been achieved by toasting the leaf. That kills tbe nicotine. Tobacco thus treated is rendered quite harmless. Aou cannot say that of the imported tobaccos, for they are mostly full of nicotine. There are, by the way, only four brands of toasted New Zealand on the market—Riverhead Gold, Navy Cut No. 3, Cavendish, and Cut Plug No. 10.
