WINNING BETS
N.S.W. TAX HITS BOOKIES. (Australian Press Association.)
SYDNEY, December 21. The Betting Tax on winning wagers was inaugurated at the Riandwiek meeting on Saturday. It caused a marked decrease in the bookmakers transactions, which, according to “the ring,” were scarcely twenty-five per cent, of the usual volume. The totalisator, however, showed a considerable increase, and punters, despite the publicity given to the subject, seemed unable to understand why the bookmakers, who are responsible for the reducing and handing to the Government ten per cent, of the winning bets, only paid 108/- for 120/-, and the punters were inclined to argue the matter till one bookmaker referred them to the Premier, Mr Lang, if they desired any explanation. The tax does nut apply to the totalisator winnings.
