WEEK END ’TRAGEDIES

(Received this day at 9. a.m.) SYDNEY, December 22. Christmas week was ushered in with a grim toll of fourteen deaths. Following tbie tragedy at Queanbeyan, there were two further domestic dramas, one resulting in the death of Crook well a grazer and wounding of his wife, and the critical wounding of a young married woman is reported. In addition there was a shooting fatality and four drownings. In one the father perished while trying to save his son. Road smashes accounted for the remainder.

EXPORTERS’ PROTEST,

(Received this day at 10.30 a.m.) SYDNEY, December 22.

Following a vigorous protest by producers and exporters, the Federal Government lias decided to grant some measure of relief ifrorn the duty of a halfpenny per pound on exported .slieep skins. As the duty lias been tabled in Parliament, the Government lias no power at present to prevent its collection, but it has been decided to refund all duty collected before a decision was readied by the House.

BANKS HELD RESPONSIBLE

Addressing the annual conference of New South Wales public schools teachers’ federation, the Minister of Education, Mr Davies, said he was not one (.if those who believed the depression would last for three'or five years. WOMEN TEACHERS

The Minister of Education annouces a new policy regarding women teachers, of whom six hundred are married. and whose husbands are receiving five pounds weekly in the State service, are to he dismissed, making openings for young men and women teachers seeking employment. The law will be amended to provide for the compulsory resignation of women teachers upon their marriage.
