HIGH SCHOOL BOARD

WENESDAY, DECEMBER J. The Board met at 3 p.m. Present: Messrs J. A.- Murdoch (Chairman), T. W. Duff, W. H. Shannon, T. W. Bruce (Acting (Secretary). Apologies were made for the absence of Messrs Clifton and King. Mr J. L. Menzies (Rector) was also present. The minutes were confirmed and outward corrowmdenc» approved. INWARD CORRESPONDENCE. From Education Department, Wellington, in connection with amendment in Finance Act to High School Board Act.—Received.

From James O’Brien, M.P., in >eference to action taken in connection with the Amending Act and stating lie had requested the Minister of 'Education to visit Hokitika before bringing the amendment to the A.ct into force.—Received.

From Treasury notifying revenue for Board £37 17s 3d.—Received. From L. Rarrowman in reference to term scholarship subsidy.—Received. In connection with accounts presented it was resolved to telegraph to the Minister asking his authority to pay them at once, a doubt having arisen aw to the power of the Board to pay out anv monev for the purposes previously authorised. Accounts as scheduled amounting to £l2B 3s 9d were passed for pavrnent subject to the approval of the Minister. . © The Treasurer reported receipts £62 14 lid, bank balance £BB 7s 7d.--Re-ceived. The Chairman moved that the sum of £97 10s as whown on the books as owing by the Returned Soldiers’ Association be written off in pursuance of the agreement made by the Board in 1923, to the effect that so long as the buildings on the section were hew,, ing bonnfide used for the benefit of the Returned Soldiers’ Association that a peppercorn rental; only charged. Seconded by Mr Duff and The Chair man. moved that the Board heard with 'the pleasure of the success of the primary classes; the Rector reporting 34 proficiency and competency out of a oln*s of 37, ov a (fO per cent; notifying then; intention of continuing to the anil that the Board looked forward with interest to the results secondary school examinations. • omled by Mr Duff and carried.
