FREAK FOR FORTUNE.
£I4OO NECKLACE FOR fid
LONDON, December 4. „ freak of fortune and a remarkable coincidence lie behind a woman s pur-r-base of a “pearly” necklace for sixpence 18 years ago, when a line of toysellers used to stretch from Cheapside to Ludgate Hill.
Mrs Baker, while shopping at Christmas, heard a tall man shouting: “Who’ll buy a coral peal necklace for sixpence ?”
Airs Baker purchased several. Two voars later, when her husband died, she was forced to sell her valuables, and she was amazed to receive a cheque for £I4OO for what she had imagined was a string of worthless heads.
Years later, when she was returning from the Argentine, Mr s Baker told the story at dinner. One of her hearers declared that he sold her the necklace He explained that he was a stockbroker and that he bet a friend he could stand all day at Ludgate and offer a pearl necklace for sixpence without selling it. Unfortunately, he forgot in which hand he was holding the genuine necklace, with which he had not intended to part.
