DEFENCE RETRENCHMENT.

CHRISTCHURCH, Dec. 15,

A number of members of the permanent defence forces stationed here have received notices this mornmg that their will be no longer required. Some of the clerical staff have also received notice. In certain cases those retrenched have sufficient service to enable them to draw a reduced pension but the younger, men will get no pension. The total affected is unknown.

Colonel.J. H. White, chief officer of the Central Military. Command, a : uJ Major Sidney G. iSandle (formerly )i Stafford), assistant Adjutant-Genial of the Central Command, both stationed at Palmerston North, received notice this morning that they retire on superannuation immediately, being the outcome of the policy of retrenchment bv the Defence Department. Colonel J. T. Standish succeeds Colonel Whyte as head of the Central Command. Major Stevens will fill the vacancy created by the transfer of Standish,

(Similar advice was received by StaffSergeant Major 'Taylor and Sergeant Finch. THEFT CHARGE. DUNEDIN, Dec. 15. Henry Walter Reid was sentenced to twelve months imprisonment for theft and false pretences. The Magistrate described the theft as a despicable one. Accused took advantage of a. man he met in a hospital and robbed him.

DUNEDIN, Dec 15

David Thomas Lilburme charged with • obtaining £2B sterling from Godfrey Hall, of fiororata, by falselv representing he had a thoroughherd English stallion named Belated standing the season at Milton. Detective Nutt all save evidence that m May last accused entered into negotiations with a bloodstock firm in Sydnev for the lease of Belaton. Between June and August lie advertised that Belaton was to stand the season. The advertisement had been circulated throughout New Zealand in large type. A/s a result Hall forwarded 1 two mares to accused. Later the .accused wrote asking for a cheque which Hall forwarded. Accused 'cashed lit at Milton and paid his debts. The horse he had advertised /never left Australia. Accused was remanded for a week.
