A DANGEROUS CALLING.
School teaching is an arduous profession, ;but it must not be forgotten that the teacher is unique in- one respect, in that ho or she enjoys at least ten weeks’ holiday on full pay every rear. If in spite of so long a rest from labour, however arduous it is, so many teachers are compelled to apply for occasional leave- during the working months, one must conclude either that the conditions under which they work are dangerously unhealthy, or that the authorities arc extraordinarily lax in their supervision. No business firm could tolerate- absences of the kind year after year, and it is plain that the educational authorities ought to look into the question very closely. Probably a proportion of the teachers are taking leave on insufficient grounds, and .if that is the case the control can easily he stiffened.—
