LATHAM’S PLAN. (Australian Press Association) SYDNEY, Dec. 11. Leading public men and the Premiers of four States heartily approve of Latham’s plan, cabled yesterday, for the creation of a non-party Council to d*eal with the economic crisis in Australia. They emphasise that this was done during the war in England, and a united front would save the present Commonwealth. > On the other hand, the Labour viewpoint is hotly opposed to Latham’s plan as it would enable the opponents of labour to make a virtue of necessity. In the Legislative Assembly a Bill to levy a tax of ten per cent on winning bets to yield two millions of revenue, passed all stages and operates on December 20th.

THE BAN EXPLAINED. ACCORDS WITH A NEW AGREEMENT. CANBERRA, December 10. In the Federal House of Representatives, the Minister for Home Affairs, Mr Blakeley, made a statement concerning the prohibition of Italian migrants from entering Australia. He said that while the Commonwealth had already overlooked the case of a number of Italians, who, in the past, had entered the Commonwealth irregularly, those now arriving would be prevented from landing, in accoidance with a new agreement made with the Italian Government under which only the female relatives and children of those already in Australia were permitted to enter. HUNGER STRIKERS. SYDNEY, Dec. 11. The imprisoned Communists have given up their hunger strike. An inflammatory statement to thib effect issued by headquarters, declares the capitalists would benefit by their deaths and the real object of Communism would be defeated. The statement also attacks the Lang Government for keeping their members in prison.
