The debate in the House of Commons ion the censure motion Introduced by Mr Baldwin on the ground that the Government had .. failed ' to formulate effective proposals on Empire trade at the Imperial Conference wa,s no doubt, as The Times observes, disappointing and unilhiminating. It was productive, however, of a little plain speaking with some consequent repercussions. To Mr J. H. Thomas, Secretary of State for the Dominions, it fell to introduce the reverberant elemeift. He referred to the offer of increased preference mad© by Canada as Mr Snowden’s effort to soften the harshness of his colleague’s expression by quoting a dictionary reference to “humbug” as a word “much in vogue with people of taste and fashion” may have been amusing, but the Prime Minister of Canada has refused to discover, any cause to smile.
