The road from Westport to Kai-a-mea, which was so badly damaged by the big earthquake, and which is being repaired by the Public Works Department, is now sufficiently advanced to allow cars through. Tlie Public Works Department decided to leave the road open during week-ends, from Saturday, at midday, till Monday at midday for the time being. Further search for the missing Marsden resident, E. Burr, has been suspended indefinitely by the police. A three weeks’ diligent search by the police and civilians has been unavailing, no trace or clue as to the whereabouts of the missing man having been found.

The Grey-Hokitika Sawmillers Cooperative Company passed a resolution to bring under the notice of the Unemployment Board, the present restricted condition of the sawmilling business, .and consequent unemployment, ami suggests the establishment of a building promotion division of the Board, to encourage immediate build ing operations with the use of Dominion material and manufacture. The resolution added that sales of the Company’s timber Had dropped 58 per cent from May to November. Mills closed total 25, and other mills were working at only 20 per cent capacity. There are 650 men unemployed.

On Saturday afternoon at the Princess Theatre, Messrs Houston and Coy will sell the rights to two publicans booths at the Christmas meeting of the Westland Racing Club, As the race meeting promises so well there should be good competition for the privileges. The meeting opens on Friday (Boxing Day) and concludes the day following, thus occupying the week end of Christmas' week.
