BOARD SECRETARY’S RESIGNATION. WELLINGTON, December 10. Mr G. Ti. Stewart, Secretary of the Wellington Education Board, tendered his resignation to the Board this morning. It was accepted with great regret, many eulogistic remarks being passed on Mr Stewart’s services to the Board. The meeting decided to place on record tlie Board’s very high appreciation of Mr Stewart’s services to the Hoard, and to education generally throughout the Dominion, and in regrotfullv accepting his resignation, to grant him three months’ leave- of absence, which Mr Forsvth (the Chairman). said would hardly equal the periods which Mr Stewart had spent in looking after Board matters instead of taking the leave which was due to him. Mr Stewart will have occupied the position of Secretary for twentyseven years when his resignation takes effect in April next. He was horn in Forfarshire, Scotland, and received his education at Dunedin at the Albany Street School, of which he was Dux. and at the Otago University. It was while Mr Stewart, was Secretary of tlie Otago Farmers’ Union that the first steps were taken to establish a farmers’ insurance scheme, which afterwards proved of great benefit to farmers.
M. F. S. Hylton, at present Asrist-•mt-Seeretarv to the Board, was later in the meeting appointed unanimoiislv as successor to Mr Stewart. Mr Hylton has the longest -service in New Zealand of anyone- in a similar position, his record being 335 years, of which 24 years- have been with the. Wellington Board, and 95 years as .Secretary of tlie Marlborough Board.
