AN UGLY SCENE. UNEMPLOYED MELEE. Tolegrapu—Per ,Press Association.) CHRISTCHURCH, Deo. 9. An ugly scene occurred dhring the unemployed demonstration inside the City Council Claim begs in Manchester (Street this morning. A number of men took posesssion of the chamber carrying banners demanding to s >e the Mayor. When he arrived he was held up to rediCule. A strong force of police arrived and ordered the men out. There was a good deal of shouting and struggling. Finally the-police drew their batons and at least one of the leaders got a sharp rap on the head and wa's ejected. This had the effect of quietening the riotous element and order was restored, the men walking out into the street.
THEFTS ADMITTED. CHRISTCHURCH, Dec-ember 9. Three charges of breaking an entering and theft were admitted before Magistrate Mosley by Leonard Gordon Hamilton, 22, a clerk. He also pleaded guilty to two charges of forging cheques. He was committed for sentence on all counts. It was shown that the accused broke into three premises in the Regent Buildings after climbing on the roof. SEARCH UNSUCCESSFUL. .•GISBORNE, December 9. Diligent search of the beaches failed to produce further evidence in connection with the boating tragedy, noi can anv person be found unaccounted for, beyond the two natives Wharekoti and *Maniffer e Paurakau who are missing, and believed to be drowned. OILFIELD REPORT. GISBORNE, December 9. The Taranaki Oldfields Coy. has started drilling at its new location. A report to-day states:—Station Waitiuigi No. 1. well water supply installation completed. Drilled to 47 feet and cemented 22 inch stove pipe casing at that depth in sandy shale. All equipment is running satisfactory. HOLIDAYS OR WORK 5 DUNEDIN. Dec. 9. Hon. Taverner has forwarded the following /telegram to Air Sawi.gei. AI.R. ; “Referring to your telegram regarding Christinas pay lor woikmen on public* works, the position is that the jobs which close down from 19th. just, do not necessarily include relief works. • As relief workers are not entitled to any statuory holidays or annua] leave on pay I have directed the Departments that relief works are not to be compulsorily closed clown ioi the usual Christina,s and New A ear vacation this year. I have also instructed the Department that any relief workers who desire to remain at work are to be allowed to do so and that those who prefer to have the usual vacation are to he automatically granted time oil, without pa} ■
