A well attended meeting of United Party supporters yesterday evening selected Mr Colin Mason, the Chairman of the Ohinemuri County Council, as the United Party’s candidate for the Thames electorate at the next election. His nomination goes forward to the Auckland executive for recommendation to the Dominion executive for confirmation. THE NEW “MONOWAI” WELLINGTON, December 2. The liner “Monowai” sailed at 3.5 p.m. today for San Francisco.

WORKER’S' FATAL INJURY

INVERCARGILL, December 2.

Alexander Williamson, labourer, aged 63, who was seriously injured in the right arm and leg through slipping in front of a truck at the limeworks at Browns yesterday, died at Southland Hospital this evening. He was admitted to the hospital early yesterday afternoon, and a blood transfusion was made in an effort to save his life.

TE AROHA JUBILEE

TE AROHA, December 2.

The Te Aroha Jubilee celebrations were continued to-day, when the pioneers of the district were entertained at a garden party in the Tourist Domain.'°Hon, Mr Stallworthy represented the Government, and addressed the gathering, also Messrs C. E. Macmillan and F. Lye, Members of Parliament. Many old identities have been attracted . from different parts of the Dominion, and throngs of people are to be seen in the streets and public gardens. The main street is brilliantly illuminated in the evenings, and the people are entering wholeheartedly intjo the celebrations. To-night the old identities are being entertained at a “song and story” evening.

The Secretary of the Post and Telegraph Department has been advised as follows by the Superintendent of the Auckland radio station that the following was received from R.M.S. Aorangi at 11.45 p.m.—“At eleven p.m. New Zealand standard time intercepted distress s’giials from S.S. Hedwig giving position at lat. 20.42, long. 11.50. Nothing was sent to indicate whether north or south, or east or west. S.Q.S. still, being .sent at 11.30 p.m. with a request to answer on forty metres. Have been answering him on forty metres but no response so far.”

OBITUARY

WELLINGTON,, December 2

The Rev. Father George Mahoney, formerly of Nelson, Hastings and W anganui,. died this evening at Lewisham Hospital, Wellington. The late lather Mahoney was a son of the late Daniel Mahoney, and he came out to New Zea r land with his parents in the year 1874. He was educated at the Marist Brothers’ School an dSt. Patrick’s College here. Afterwards he, underwent his theological training at Meanee Marist Seminary, Havvkes ILiy. He w«\s oiclained at Wellington in 1898, and was afterwards stationed at Nelson and later at Hastings and Wanganui. His health failing, he retired from active ministration three years ago, since then he had resided at Wellington with his brother, the Rev. Stanerislaus Mahoney, Parish Priest of St. Mary of the Angels, in Boulcott Street. The deceased was 61 years of age.

Lewis Edward Williams, 21, stated to be in a good job and earning £4 10s a week, got two years at Borstal,-to-day from Magistrate Page, hav ng failed to take advantage of a previous term of probation. He pleaded guilty to two charges of theft of £6 13s lid. from .John Craig Wright. It ’was stated that he had got into the habit of renting cars from Rentaf Cars Ltd. Returning one day, he saw the office open with no one in it, and took 13s lid from the till, and on a subsequent occasion £6.

CLAIM FOR. PROPERTY DAMAGE WELLINGTON, November 28.

For several days, the Supreme Court was occupied, with a case brought by John Edwin Hunt, seeking compensation from the City Corporation for damage to his property in Goldie’s Brae by a slip. The Court’s decision announced to-day, awards the plaintiff £I4OO up the condition that the land become tile property of the Council each party to pay its own costs.

At a meeting of the Board of Trustees of the National Art Gallery and Dominion Museum, plans for the proposed cairrillon tower, which provides for a massive square campanile 146 feet high of reinforced concrete were formally approved, and it was decided to call for alternative tenders—(l) A skeleton tower only for the suspension of the forty-nine hells of the carillon.
