That much heavier fines should be imposed on motorists convicted of intoxication while in charge of motor vehicles, was suggested to the Main Highways Board by the Hawke’s Buy County Council. He considered that the punishment was not commensurate with the crime, as a drunken motorist was an absolute menace to human life, -and at the least should be prohibited from driving: a car for all time, Mr F. W. Furkart replied that it was not a matter for the Board, but he agreed that the punishment should be heavier.
