Charles Evans, aged twenty-eight was shot in the abdomen by the Captain of Hawkesbury river vehicle punt during a brawl on the vessel. Evans is on the point of death. He and five companions refused to pay their fees on the punt and after a wordy warfare, a. fierce fight commenced, the men attacking a deck hand who was flung to the deck kicked and punched. Th ( > Captain seeing the deck hand being unmercifully battered fired two shots over the men’s heads. As this had no effect a third shot was fired and Evans fell. He was rushed to the hospital, bleeding profusily. The five men were charged with assault.
