President. Hoover has selected Mr William L'oak, of Virginia, the Legislative Agent of the Brotherhood of Raiiway Train Men, to fill the post of Secretary for Labour, in view of the coming resignation of SenatorElect Davis. Mr Hoover has issued a stinging rebuke to Mr Green, President of the American Federation of Labour who requested the selection of a member of that body for tbe- post. Mr Hoover stated that the ultimatum impelled him to maintain the pinciple of equal opportunity and select Mr Doak, who was not a member. Representative Fish, whose Congressional Committee has conducted an investigation into Communistic activities in United States lasting for several months, declared to-night in a nation wide radio talk that there were half a. million Communists and their sympathisers in America with one hundred thousand in New York City alone, and their activities “were far more extensive and pernicious than anticipated before the investigation began.” He said Communism would be a serious threat to American industry, but for the efforts of the American Federation of Labour.
“United States cannot stand idly by and see American industries demoralised, because Congress and the Federal Government continue blind to facts.” AMERICAN DIVIDEND. (Received til's dav at 9. a.m.) NEW YORK, November 30. Six hundred companies will on Monday pay total dividends of sixty millions sterling and bring the cash disbursements for 1930 to a. point where they compare much more favourably with last year’s than had been expected, Last year’s total from nine thousand two hundred companies, was almost a thousand million sterling. What interests Wall Street most is the fact that the largest dividend payers are maintaining disbursements at or above last year’s figures.
