OBITUARY

VERY REV. T. M. GILBERT, S.M,

CHRISTCHURCH, Nov. 24

The deatli occurred hore to-night, of tlie Rev. Father Thomas M. Gilbert, aged 47 years, the Rector of St. Bede’s College, Christchurch.

The death, which occurred shortly after 11 o’clock last night at Lewisham Hospital, Christchurch, of the Very Rev. Thomas Gilbert, S.M., M.A., Rector of St. Bede’s College, Christchurch, former Rector of St. Patrick’s College, Wellington; removes one of the leading educationalists of the Dominion. A native of Kumara. where lie was horn 47 years ago, the late Father Gilbert early exhibited exceptional talents and character when lie was the pupil of the Sisters of Mercy at his native town, and, after winning a scholarship which led to his entry into St. Patrick’s College, Wellington, whence lie proceeded, on completing the course there, to the Seminary of the Marist Order at Meanee, Hawke’s Bay. After his ordination to the priesthood, he returned to :St., Patrick’s College, and joined the professorial staff, becoming •eventually Rector of the institution. Ho had been in failing health for a long time past.

The late Father Gilbert is survived by one sister, Miss Mary Gilbert, of Taihape; and by five brothers. Rev. Father Ja-nv’s Gilbert, M.S.H., of Coogee, Sydney (who recently was a visitor to his deceased brother). Rev. Brother Fergus, of the Marist Order, Auckland, MY William B. Gilbert. Secretary of the Harbour Hoard. Grey mo uth ; Mr Jeremiah Gilbert, of tli« Manawntu district: and Mr John Gilbert, sawmlller. of Kumara.
