On a perfect wicket, but in sultry weather, the West Indies cricket team made ftheii| Australia debut to-day. The visiting* batsmen created a favourable impression, but they appeared to be short of practice. Tlie openers, Roach and Marin, gave their side a good start, adding sixtytwo in ninety minutes .before lunch without loss. Roach revealed some excellnt strokes. Fairfax caused a stir after the adjournment when he clean bowled Roach and Bartlett in one over.
Headley showed himself to be the stylist of the team, lie scoring twentyfive in quick time. The first wicket fell for sixty-four, and with Headley’s dismissal, the total was 4 for 95. Grant and Birkett then became associated in a partnership of 56 runs. Constantine, who immediately became a favourite with the crowd, treated them to a splendid exhibition of batting, and running. In the latter department, his team mates have a good deal to learn.
McCabe secured the wickets of Constantine and Francis in the one over, both being out to good catches, The tail failed, and the side waa out for 188.
Oldfield was never seen to better ad. vantage behind the wickets, he claiming six victims. The visitors were at sea against slow bowling, and Oldfield was quick to seize his opportunities. An amazed crowd of fifteen thousand saw Hobbs set still another record, when he batted for one hour for five runs. Hobbs and Sutcliffe played from Vizi anagram eleven against Sir Stanley Jackson’s team.. The latter made 173. Vizi anagram lost three wickets for sixteen (Sutcliffe six).
