TOTE FIGURES DECLINE.

CHRISTCHURCH, Nov. 17
Totajisator investments at Riccarton and Addington during Carnival week showed a decrease of £98,778 Ids, or nearly 25 per cent, as compared with the totals for the cariesponding week last year. The amount invested at Riccarton on the four days of racing was £161,857, as against £219,104 10s iast \*ar. (Jn three days of trotting at Addington, the totalisator investments aggregated £159,781, compared with ■ £201,312. HOSPITAL DEBTOR. FORCED TO PAY UP. WELLINGTON, Nov. 17. An attempt to avoid payment of fees to Auckland Hospital Board by a man who received £1,200 sterling compensation for 'injury, was nipped in the bud by- the detention of the
debtor as lie was boarding a vessel at Wellington for England. The man later paid over £BS sterLing, which was due to the Board, plus expenses and was released.
BURGLARY CHARGE
Palmerston n., Nov. 17.
At the Police Court this morning, John Jones, a showman and labourer, was charged with breaking and entering the shop of H. Mortensen and taking jewellery valued at £l5B. Accused was remanded to Friday next.
DREDGING FOR GOLD
INVERCARGILL, November 13.
The Golden Terrace Extended Gold Dredging Company-reports a return of ninety-two ounces for nine days’ work from the ground previously worked by the old dredge. The company expects soon to be on a better wash, when increased returns •' are confidently anticipated. The machinery of the big dredge is running smoothly.

As the result of trouble at Ratanapa on Saturday, and one man being knocked down with the stock of a rifle, the police were hurriedly sent for from Marton and a Maori was arrested and remanded for a week on an assault charge.

While engaged in the upstairs office oif the New Zealand Importing Coy yesterday afternoon, Mr IV. H. Brown noticed a man on the rodf of an adjoining premises and pursued him over the roofs. Although hampered with a heavy travelling trunk the man proceeded in a daring manner along a parapet and finally dropped to a .street but was chased and captured on the corner of Rnngitikei and King Streets. WATERED MILK. GREYMOUTH, Nov. 17. Frances James Harapson of Reefton, was fined £2 with costs on a charge of adding water to milk sold. CONVERTING A CAR. , GREYMOUTH, Nov. 17.
