WEST INDIAN TEAM

VISITOR’S GOOD SHOWING

WELLINGTON, November 12

The West Indian cricketers made a most auspicious first appearance in New Zealand to-day, when they commenced a two days’ exhibition match a£a|fist a Wellington representative eleven. The honours of the day were all with the visitors. 'Wellington had to scratch for close upon four hours to string 195 together against very steady howling and brilliant fielding. Constantine (Trinidad) lived up to Id’s reputation as one of the world’s outstanding players by taking six wickets for 24 runs off fourteen overs and fielding in a manner that has never before been surpassed on the Basin Reserve.

Even Dempster could do little against the machine-like length of the visitors’ attack, „It took him thirtyfive minutes -tf} reach double figures, and after reaching 23 lie was caught at the wickets off Constantine. Hepthe colt who was making his first appearance for the province, shaped as well as any of the local playemVand M’Girr also used his feet in getting out to meet the ball.

The West Ind ians showed brillia nee when they wentsto the wickets. Roaeli ;booked. Parsloe’s first; hall of the innings to tiie fence at long leg and repeated the stroke off the third ball. Hunter also did the same tiling off the "first*Rail of second over. A brilliant catch by Hankins behind the wickets on the leg side disposed of Roach, and off the last ball of the, day Sea ley was brilliantly caught at fine leg by. Demptser, who threw himself to make the catch;

Birkett the West Indian vice-cap-tain, a tall, youthful right-hander from Trinidad, came next, and helped Hunto to run the score along to 60, when ‘ the' wicketkeeper, who had contributed 18, was nicely taken by Hepburn at cover, off Blundell. Martin, a Jamaican left-hander, then cemented a useful partnership with Birkett. Several changes wore made in the howling. At 119, Blundell took the ball from Parsloe, whose eight ovets had cost 23 runs. Birkett placed Newman to leg for three, and drove Blundell past cover to the. pickets.
