STEAMER IN COLLISION
HIT A WHALE. SYDNEY, October 18. Accustomed to uneventful voyages between Liverpool and Australian ports, officers and crew of the Scottish Shire line steamer Berwickshire, which has reached Sydney, were provided with some excitement on the present journey. The vessel came into collision with a large wliftle when round the Cape of Good Hope, . Captain Evans, master of the steamer, said that a heavy., swell was encountered as soon as the vessel .reached the Cape. It was presumed that the whale must have been asleep, as' it apparently made no attempt to move clear. The officer on watch did not see the monster in the heavy sen, and its presence was only revealed by the crash.
This was by no means the worst of the encounter. The force of the collision, assisted by the swell, lifted the monster on to the forecastle head, Blubber was forced up the hawser pipes. The fourth officer, with the aid of volunteers from the crew, took
hacksaws and attacked the huge mass which littered the deck forward. The body had to be sliced into several pieces before it could be removed. It
was hours before all traces of the occurrences hnd been obliterated. Members of the crew stated that the whale was about 30ft in length and of a smoky grey colour.
